OSCE / OSPE
The College of Nursing, East Coast Institute of Medical Sciences adopts the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) methods for teaching and assessing practical skills among nursing students. These methods are extensively utilized in both internal assessments and university practical examinations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OSCE/OSPE served as an effective approach for conducting practical examinations while ensuring continuity in skill evaluation.

The OSCE/OSPE system comprehensively evaluates students’ professional behaviour, communication skills, and procedural competency. It helps identify students who require additional support in performing clinical procedures at an early stage of their programme. Faculty members provide remedial guidance, additional practical sessions, and access to appropriate learning resources to strengthen students’ clinical competence.
Simulation-Based Learning
The Clinical Skill and Simulation Laboratory is dedicated to promote evidence-based simulation practices among nursing students to enhance their clinical competence and patient care skills.
Simulation-based learning recreates real-life clinical situations through structured activities designed to demonstrate procedures, clinical decision-making, and critical thinking skills. Advanced simulation devices and mannequins are used to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in a safe and controlled environment. This method enables students to develop confidence, improve technical proficiency, and apply theoretical knowledge effectively in clinical practice.
Student-Centric Teaching Methods

Mentor–Mentee System
College of Nursing, East Coast Institute of Medical Sciences follows a structured Mentor–Mentee System to support the academic, personal, and professional growth of nursing students. Mentoring plays a significant role in helping students to successfully complete their education and training.
The mentor–mentee relationship is designed to be interactive, supportive, and goal-oriented, fostering strong rapport among students (mentees), faculty members (mentors), and parents whenever necessary. The system helps to address academic, mental, physical, and environmental challenges faced by students throughout their course of study.
Objectives and Responsibilities of Mentors
- During the initial interaction, mentors explain the benefits of the mentor–mentee relationship and encourage active participation in curricular and co-curricular activities.
- Mentors motivate students to develop innovative ideas, deepen subject knowledge, enhance practical skills, and build professional networks that support future career growth.
- Mentors assess the academic background, strengths, and areas for improvement of mentees to help them to set realistic academic and career goals.
- Based on regular interactions and feedback, mentors provide guidance and academic support tailored to individual student needs.
- Mentors motivate and counsel students who experience setbacks in examinations, projects, or clinical training, helping them to overcome weaknesses and improve performance.
- Since every student possesses unique abilities and challenges, mentors identify areas where students require support and help them to strengthen those competencies.
- Mentors conduct meetings with mentees at least once every month to review progress and provide continuous guidance. Communication is also maintained through email or instant messaging whenever necessary.
- Mentors maintain proper records of student progress and mentoring activities regularly for continuous monitoring and follow-up.
Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes are statements that describe the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies students are expected to achieve at the end of a course or programme. They provide a clear understanding of what learners will be able to know, perform, and apply in real-life professional settings after successful completion of their education.
In nursing education, learning outcomes play a vital role in guiding the teaching–learning process and ensuring the overall development of students. They help in preparing competent nursing professionals who can deliver safe, effective, ethical, and patient-centered care. Learning outcomes also support the development of critical thinking, clinical decision-making, communication, leadership, and research abilities required to meet the changing demands of the healthcare system.

M.Sc. Nursing
On completion of the MSc Nursing programme, the post graduates will be able to:

DGNM / GNM
On completion of the GNM programme, the students will be able to:

- Deliver maternal and child healthcare services, including midwifery care.

- Apply nursing principles and procedures in patient care.

On completion of the ANM programme, the students will be able to:

- Assist in immunization, nutrition, and family welfare programmes.
- Identify common health problems and provide appropriate first-line care and referrals.

Field Visits
Field visits are organized as an integral part of the nursing curriculum to provide students with experiential learning opportunities and practical exposure to various healthcare and community settings. These visits enable students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life healthcare practices.
Students of the College of Nursing, East Coast Institute of Medical Sciences are taken to different healthcare institutions, community health centers, rehabilitation centers, specialty clinics, industries, and public health organizations to enhance their understanding of healthcare delivery systems and community-oriented services.
Field visits help students develop observational skills, communication abilities, professional attitudes, and a deeper understanding of patient care, healthcare administration, infection control measures, and multidisciplinary approaches in healthcare. These educational experiences also encourage critical thinking, leadership qualities, teamwork, and social responsibility among nursing students.
